Distinguish businesses that share the same building

Clarify unit numbers, reception arrangements, entrances and business identity when several independent local businesses use one street address.

A shared address does not mean a shared business. Studios, clinics and office centres may contain independent organisations with their own customers, contact details and hours. Directory profiles should preserve those distinctions while explaining the parts of arrival that genuinely belong to the building as a whole.

01 / 05Identify the individual operation

Use the business's public name and its own service description. Do not borrow the building operator's identity to make a profile appear more established. Confirm that customers can actually obtain the listed service at the address. A postal arrangement or occasional meeting room should not be presented as a permanently staffed customer location if that is not how the business operates.

02 / 05Include the unit detail customers need

Check the suite, floor or studio designation against the signage visitors will encounter. Put the information in the appropriate address field where possible. Keep it consistent with booking confirmations and the location page. If a unit numbering scheme has changed, explain the useful current identifier rather than expecting customers to resolve conflicting numbers when they arrive.

03 / 05Separate reception from the business

A building reception team may provide directions without handling the tenant's bookings or customer enquiries. Make the distinction clear. Publish the tenant's own contact route unless the shared reception genuinely acts on its behalf. If visitors need to check in, describe the process briefly and avoid implying that the building's general opening hours are the business's appointment timetable.

04 / 05Use the right entrance and map context

Large buildings can have several entrances facing different streets. A map pin alone may not indicate which door customers need. Support it with a short arrival note or an entrance photograph where the directory allows. Check that directions do not send visitors through a service entrance or into another tenant's premises merely because it is closer to the map marker.

05 / 05Keep similar profiles distinguishable

Review neighbouring records before reporting duplicates. Two businesses can legitimately share an address while operating independently. Compare names, services and contact routes, not just the street line. When a tenant leaves, update its own profile without altering records for other occupants. Shared premises require careful identification rather than blanket cleanup of every entry using the same postcode.
